365DoT - Day 178

Final panel from the strip. I'm using the final panel cause I've already re-written it and these were the only panels to stay the same.

365DoT - Day 154

Gonna post part 2 of the video tomorrow. As a tease, here is a still from the video.

365DoT - Day 153

Welcome back to the present. I've been working on an opening credits sequence for TrevorCopter. My goal is to complete it and include it when I send the strip out for publication. This is part one of my trial run.

365DoT - Day 152

And here we are at the end of the month and this final step down memory lane. This last drawing is the bridge: an old picture (2009) for a future project. I've had this idea for Shittiness is 4th Place (a parody of the Peanuts book, Happiness is a Warm Puppy) and this is one of the early sketches. It's also one of my top priorities to finish by the end of the year. Tomorrow, I'll be back in the present and looking forward to what comes next.

Shittiness is the air conditioner breaking on a hot day.

365DoT - Day 121

This is a sketch of a TC comic for the fourth story arc, "Around the World in 80 Strips," an balloon race adventure that will be told in exactly 80 strips. This is strip 1.

365DoT - Day 112

This story, I do know what will happen. Following the first story arc, Trevor will be honored for his efforts with a gala. Only problem is that he will completely forget about it until 15 minutes before it starts. So Trevor and the gang have to get ready and rush off to the gala, while Agent Hawke and The Rubester have to stall.

365DoT - Day 111

This is a sketch of a comic idea. I have no idea of the context, other than the story will take place while Trevor is in high school/college. And I have no idea what terrible thing is behind them. I just liked the idea of Trevor completely missing the point.

365DoT - Day 73

This is what I did with the other half of the paper after yesterday's Teddy sketch. This is Mallory (which I misspelled in the drawing), a love interest for Trevor in TrevorCopter's second story arc, "Exotic Locale Love Story." She is a princess, but this is not revealed to Trevor during the course of the story (and her butler is the character design I use for professional butthole, CSU Chancellor Charles Reed. He SHOULD be a lowly servant).

365DoT - Day 67

Fenton & the Genie is going to be a part of the 3D project and I want to share some of the pieces done so far.

365DoT - Day 61

As promised, the teaser for my 3D movie, which I am doing through our friends at Campus MovieFest.

To give you a little perspective on the project, a writer is having a hard time coming up with a children's story as a result of a bad break-up and the general souring of his worldview. This is one of his aborted stories.

365DoT - Day 8.2

I was looking through the previous posts of 365DoT just a second ago and caught something in the opening post. I said that I would show some in progress pieces, so I decided to share this. Its the beginning of the Moses sketch I did on Day 4. The finished comic will be posted tomorrow.

365 Days of Teddy

I have a little cardboard box on my desk at work. For about a month, I have been filling it with what I sketch during my breaks. There is something very satisfying about holding the sketches in the sizable stack they've now become. Nearly did it every day, but definitely averaged one a day. And as tonight showed, the sketches and doodles can lead to story ideas, which will lead to even more drawings. A wonderful circle of creativity.

But now it is time to take it a step further. I have started to consider my future. I'm not saying that, for the first time, I finally went "Oh yeah. I have to figure out my life." Just been considering the immediate. The next 10 months really. That's when my lease is up and I have decided that I need to be pointed in a certain direction at that point. What that direction will lead is what the 10 months will determine.

So, its time to go all in. For me to come to the proper decision, I have to commit to the life I want to have during these 10 months. Its only when examining every angle that a proper conclusion can be made. It starts with one post. ANYONE can do one post, though. Its about the post that are further down the line. As the stack gets bigger and the cardboard box fills up, it becomes more impressive and I am that much more invested. Its about investing a year into become who I have always wanted to be: a cartoonist.

That last time I was at the Charles M. Schulz Museum, I learned something that has since stuck with me. Schulz was 27 when Peanuts first started, a month and a half before his 28th birthday. That's the time table I want for myself, started on whatever it is that establishes me by the time I am 27. Today, on April 2nd, 2012, I am 25 years, 8 months, 24 days old. 27 months to go.

I started this blog on March 16, 2009. Three years ago. 1113 days ago. And this is post 100 (It happens to be a happy accident that this post knocks us into triple digits). That's 1013 potential posts that never were. 1013 drawings, stories, characters that were never thought of. Looking at the post history is even more discouraging when it is broken down further. 21 posts in 2009, 47 in 2010, 18 in 2011 and 14 this year (I'm not sure if you are interested in those figures, dear reader. But I need to keep those down in writing). Its another way to motivate me for what I want to do.

For the next 365 days, I will post a drawing to the blog, done that day. Not just blurry sketches (at some point during the 365 days, the image quality of said sketches will improve dramatically), but full comics, panels, drawings, in progress pieces; the progression of my style, which has be jumping in leaps and bounds (as an upcoming comic will attest to).

The best part about this (beside furthering my skill as an artist and instilling in me a sorely needed amount of discipline) is that the final day will be April 1st (and Kevin Kauker's 23rd birthday). And having that bit of incidental scheduling is just too good to pass up. Let us begin.

(This single sketch lead to the idea of a trilogy for TrevorCopter)

Character Designs - Jesus

Finishing up a comic today about Jesus and the GOP. But before I post that, I wanted to share these character designs for the character. All were hand-drawn, then edited in Photoshop. Comics to come later today.

More Duncey and the Dumb Snowman

Here are a few more illustrations for Duncey and the Dumb Snowman. I'm in the process of a second story, currently titled "Duncey and the Dumb Snowman and The Infinite Chicken"

Changing Evolution

There are a few strips that I really remember. These are the strips that I drew when I first started Teddy the Bear again back in Fall of 2008. This idea has evolved a lot of the past two years and I think it would be fun to show off how one idea has evolved over time to reach its best form (or at least its most optimal form). This idea is an important one for me because it was part of the original batch I sent into the Star and will be included in the batch that is sent into newspapers over the next month.

A Message to those in power...

This message is true. While the presentation could be considered tasteless by some, it is something that we need to be considering with all the cuts to budgets and schools. In my opinion, the cuts to art in school is tragic. For myself, being creative is such a great outlet to whatever if getting me down or whatever is lifting me up. Some people aren't mean to be creative, but to think that those who are meant for that life are never given the opportunity makes me sad. So, I make a Hitler joke.
